Back when I lived down south, I always ordered the same dessert: Dom Pedro. South Africans will immediately know what I mean, because it’s on the menu of almost every restaurant in South Africa. When we came to Europe, this was one thing I missed on the menu over here. So it was time to look for a recipe for it.

A very simple and quick way to make a Dom Pedro is to buy a vanilla milkshake and pour a spoon of whisky in it. That definitely tastes like a Dom Pedro, but it’s not very sophisticated of course! So I went to look for a recipe for Dom Pedro, and came across this one with Amarula.

It just so happens that Amarula is one of my favorite drinks! For those who don’t know Amarula… it’s made from the marula fruit:

The exotic marula fruit is found only on the sub-Saharan plains of Africa, where it grows in the wild for just a few weeks of the year. Not just totally delicious, it’s also rich in vitamin C, potassium, calcium and magnesium, as well as protein.

A healthy drink, don’t you think! (Only joking of course!)

Without further ado, here’s the easy recipe for Dom Pedro:

Ingredients

4 cups Vanilla Ice-Cream, slightly softened
1/2 cup Amarula Liqueur {or Kahlua}
3/4 cup Fresh Cream {double cream/thick cream}
1 Flake Chocolate Bar, crumbled {or any shaved Chocolate}

Method

  • Place the Ice-Cream, Liqueur and Cream in a blender – blitz until combined.
  • Pour into serving glasses and sprinkle with Chocolate flakes/crumbs.
  • Serve immediately.
